- Hindu Creation Legend
- In Hindu myth the world is now in its fourth Yuga or age. The first of these lasted 4,000 divine years, being preceded and followed by twilights of 400 divine years. The second lasted 3,000 divine years with twilights of 300, the third 2,000 with twilights of 200, and the fourth of 1,000 with twilights of 100 divine years. The four Yugas together cover a period of 12,000 divine years or 4,320,000 human years. This period is named a Mahayuga. A thousand Mahayugas make a day of Brahma, this being the length of time separating the Creation from the end of the world. The day of Brahma, or Kalpa, is divided into fourteen periods, named Manvantara, each of which is ruled over by a Manu. (As a thousand cannot be divided by fourteen without remainder, it is probable that the stories of the Manus belong to some different faith.) The present Manu is the seventh, which would put the world about mid career. See Vedic Sacred Writings.
